Leaving Blanks in the City:A Flâneur’s Vision of Taipei

Abstract
Walking in the city of Taipei, what I enjoy most are the spaces in between buildings. The places are often left out by major development efforts, unnoticed by mainstream media, but they can be full of life and beauty in the eyes of a flâneur.
A flâneur’s view on city is quite different from the view of urban planners. As Taipei is going through urban regeneration, the city transforms to become more crammed and polished, and the “leaving-blank” spaces are disappearing. Can flâneurs’ private view of the city become public vision, to create a more diverse, poetic and livable Taipei?
Keywords: leaving- blank, flâneur, urban regeneration, urban planning, city writing
